James O'Shea

James O'Shea

We welcome Dr James O’Shea, a highly experienced and compassionate CBT psychotherapist who specialises in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and trauma-related conditions.

With over 30 years of experience in mental health, James brings clinical depth, academic excellence, and a strong person-centred approach to his work.

He is known for his calm, grounded presence and his commitment to helping clients recover from trauma with evidence-based and meaningful support.  

James’s therapy sessions are delivered online at a fee of €80 per session.

James provides psychotherapy exclusively for individuals over the age of 18 who are seeking support for PTSD, grief disorder, single-incident trauma, or childhood and developmental trauma.

He holds a doctorate in Mental Health from Middlesex University and postgraduate qualifications from Queen’s University Belfast, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin City University, and Maynooth University. He holds professional memberships with BABCP, BACP, ACI, and NMBI.

Throughout his career, James has served in several national leadership roles, including Director of Nursing and Midwifery Education, National Lead for Mental Health, and Director of the HSE’s National Addiction Training Programme.

He is currently the chairperson of the board of Addiction Counsellors of Ireland (ACI) the professional body representing addiction counsellors in Ireland.

He is the co-developer and lead author of SAOR (brief and extended brief interventions for alcohol/ substance use) and CoSAR (Coping Skills for Addiction Recovery), which represent core national programmes utilised across the Irish health service.

James has trained extensively with Professors William Miller and Stephen Rollnick, the founders of Motivational Interviewing (MI), and is internationally recognised as an MI trainer. He has lectured at many of Ireland’s leading universities and has presented at national and international events on trauma, psychotherapy, and clinical supervision.
